dont buy any car without a clean title.
Use carfax and ask the dealer to show you the actual title to see its clear.

You'll save lots of $$$ actually. Just be sure that what you are buying isn't a piece of junk and that you're getting your cash's worth.

When you negative equity is added to a loan for the Versa and the salesman commission and dealer profit, you will actually end up owing more than you do now and for a lesser car. All you are doing is restarting the payment clock.

You cannot finance your way out of debt.

ok, at the risk starting a springsteen riot, I think the Nebraska album is way overrated but NOT this song….one of the BEST springsteen songs ever (along with wreck on the hiway.) it says it all

The Montana/Venture were the best in class for fuel but had big problems with their intake manifolds, there are two in my family and both have gone through this problem. The new Toyota Sienna and Honda Odyssey are big and very reliable, also very nice to drive. When it comes to gas consumption the difference between all the vans is negligible. The KIA is one of the worst and the Safari or Astro your mechanic recommended is truck based and poor on gas. Buying from a dealer is a little safer but good deals can be had through a private sale, do your homework either way and have it inspected before buying, ALWAYS.

Used cars? LOL sweet, you'll be rolling in Miller High Life for the rest of your life.

Maybe you can get back the 400,000 jobs we've lost here in California while you're at it, and rebuild the Detroit auto industry and all the thousands of small businesses it supported, too.
Perhaps you have a plan to get back the billions in taxes those businesses generated for the state, local, and federal government as well?
    Used cars. Ha.

Sounds like you are doing OK. Other ideas are:
Cut down water wastage – don't leave tap running when brushing teeth. Same applies to shower.
Use timer for hot water immersion. Mine is set for one hour twice a day. I don't need to have constant hot water during the hours I am out.
Cook several meals at once. It takes less power to reheat or microwave later.
See if you can delay your weekly shop by one day. In theory, by the 7th day, you should have a week's spending money in hand.
Defer haircuts for an extra week or two, or grow hair long. Use face flannel to mop up excess water drops from body after shower, or from hair after washing. Towel stays almost dry, needs less laundering.
Dry laundry on clothes horse indoors or on clothesline in open air

First of all take a deep breath. So many people are living paycheck to paycheck and it's the loss of those paychecks that are putting people in the situation you are facing now. It's great that you have $5,000 in savings because many people don't. I don't think that a car is the answer to your problems though. You can get ALOT of cab rides and help family and friends with gas money. Try to make that money last you for food, utilities, etc. Keep your transportation needs to emergencies only like grocery shopping every two weeks instead of daily. Review your budget and cut expenses to make that money you have go as far as possible. If you get a car, you need insurance… you need to put gas in it… you might need maintenance on it. Think about setting up a business of your own to generate income. Help other people with money problems by starting up a neighborhood coop group. Learn to do website design from home with a legitimate business. It's time to set your goals so that you can achieve them. The most important thing you can have in your house is love. The economy WILL get better but you've got to ride out the storm with clear thinking instead of impulse. A car is a want. You've got to concentrate on needs first… food, shelter, medical needs, utilities, etc. It goes with the old biblical verse, "I cried because I had no shoes until I saw a man without any feet."
